Keynote Presentation -Music, Movement and Learning: Building Muscles in Young Brains!

Mike Longoria, a.k.a. Dr. Mike!, has a Ph.D. in early childhood education and has 25 years of early childhood experience in the capacity as a Pre-K, kindergarten, and special education teacher, Head Start administrator, University professor, independent consultant, curriculum developer, and recording artist. Dr. Mike has keynoted early childhood conferences nationally and has conducted staff development for child care providers, Head Start, PreK, and kindergarten teachers throughout the country.  His innovative and original approach to integrating music and movement in the classroom will allow you to experience the joy and excitement it brings to education, while developing “muscles in young brains”.  Furthermore, research supports that movement is the preferred style of learning for “fidgety”, “overactive”, “restless” and “troublesome” children.  This form of teaching not only makes learning fun and exciting, but more importantly, it meets the needs of ALL children.

Building a Culture of Inclusion

With the many racial and social tensions that have sought to divide us, we need strategies to ensure that our schools and communities are places that encourage diversity, inclusion and belonging.  This process begins as we become aware of our implicit biases and step up to be allies for marginalized groups.  When we do this, we create cultures with strong teams and great family partnerships where everyone feels valued.  Do you want to be among those who build such cultures?  If so, this session is for you!

Developing Social Competence and Resilience

Resilience and social competence have been identified as the two critical abilities a child needs to be successful as an adult.  However many children lack resilience due to a communication delays, learning differences, social anxiety, and even overexposure to screen time.  Therefore, these children may miss other peoples non-verbal cues, misread others intentions, or fail to think about their communication partners perspective.  Developing social competence takes direct teaching and practice.  Learn how you can help your student find better success in social situations.

Learning STEM’s from Play

Early Childhood Educators play such an important role in inspiring children’s interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Learning through movement has been shown to increase children’s comprehension and I support their natural curiosity. Many activities that focus on general play can be enhanced to incorporate STEM topics and support children’s natural desire to ask questions and learn from the environment around them. In this session we will talk about how to adapt general lesson to incorporate movement and you will walk away with new physical play activities that align with the math and science Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines.
